Eligible Illinois residents can apply for help to pay their heating bill.

Governor Pat Quinn urged families to apply for a grant through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, Monday morning at a church on the city's South Side.

The state has received almost $175 million in federal funds to assist low-income families for this winter season. The program is expected to make energy assistance payments on behalf of more than 300,000 households this winter.

"Heat in the winter is not a privilege, it's a vital necessity, and we have some pretty cold winters in Illinois. I hope it isn't cold this winter, but we have to be prepared," said Gov. Quinn.

Applications are accepted on a first-come, first served basis.

To find out more, visit the state's LIHEAP site or you can call the toll-free hotline at 1 (877) 411-WARM.
