More Ill. schools fall short of No Child Left Behind standards despite test gains

October 30, 2009 (CHICAGO) -- Hundreds of Illinois public schools have been placed on academic monitoring for failing to meet performance targets under the federal No Child Left Behind law.

The move comes even as state students perform better on standardized tests.

The Illinois State Board of Education released its annual report card of school performance data today.

The data shows nearly 300 schools and districts were placed on improvement status for the first time this year. That means they didn't make sufficient progress for two years in a row under No Child Left Behind.

State schools Superintendent Christopher Koch says that doesn't mean schools aren't improving -- but federal performance targets are becoming more stringent.

He's calling for a re-examination of No Child Left Behind.
